The RYA Level 1 course for juniors is a fun, practical introduction to sailing designed for children aged 8 and above. It forms part of the Royal Yachting Association’s Youth Sailing Scheme.
Course Aim
To introduce juniors to the basics of sailing in a safe and enjoyable way.
Main Topics Covered
- Parts of the boat: Learning basic sailing terminology and understanding how the boat works.
- Rigging the boat: Simple rigging with help from instructors.
- Basic sailing skills: Steering, controlling speed, basic tacking and gybing.
- Launching and recovery: Helping to launch and bring the boat ashore.
- Wind awareness: Recognising wind direction and its effect on the boat.
- Safety basics: Wearing a buoyancy aid, understanding water safety rules.
- Fun and confidence-building: Games and hands-on experience to boost confidence.
Outcome
By the end of the course, juniors should be able to:
- Understand basic sailing principles
- Steer and handle a dinghy under supervision
- Demonstrate basic awareness of safety on and around the water
